The Best Canoeing in the World: Algonquin Park, Ontario

By John B Galt

Algonquin Park is Ontario's oldest provincial park, and the last provincial park that still allows logging within it. Algonquin Park is the oldest and the most famous provincial park in Ontario and one of the largest in Canada. Algonquin Park is located approximately two and a half hours north of the city of Toronto, and is a protected wilderness sanctuary that encompasses over 7,725 square kilometres of pristine forests, lakes, rivers and wetlands. Because there is no where else like it and Algonquin Park is one of the few places on the planet that looks much like it did hundreds of years ago.

Canoe

Algonquin Park is one of the crown jewels when it comes to canoeing destinations. Canoe enthusiasts enjoy more than 1,500 km of canoe routes, many of them interconnected by portage paths. Canoeing in Algonquin Park consists of mainly flat water canoeing and portaging. Canoeists will share the lake with families of mallards and merganser ducks, and the occasional beaver and muskrat.

Moose

Wildlife Viewing Algonquin Park is unequalled in Ontario, perhaps even in North America, for seeing moose. Moose sightings are frequent along the Parkway corridor in spring, while the deer population varies from year to year. Moose, black bear, wolves, white-tailed deer, beaver, birds and turtles are but a few of the viewable wildlife that can be found in Algonquin Park and the surrounding region. Moose viewing is best in spring, early summer and during the mating season in late September.

Cabin

Our winter trips all involve heated cabins or lodges, so you don't have toworry about our cold Canadian nights. The log cabin is ideal for those peoplelooking for an Algonquin learning/cultural adventure with a comfortable bed at the end of the day. Rest tired bones in the wood fired sauna and sleep in Log Cabin comfort.

Algonquin Park is truly a perfect Ontario Getaway destination. Algonquin Park is home to an amazing diversity of life and a premiere destination for wildlife viewing. Algonquin Park is famous for its wolves, partly because the Park has been a major centre of wolf research since the 1960s, but also because our wolves are relatively accessible to millions of people without the benefit of guides or expensive expeditions into remote areas. Ontario's natural Algonquin Park is ideal for the sport enthusiast or avid adventurer who will be delighted with the fishing and mountain biking opportunities available at our doorstep.
